General Management of Overdoses and Toxicity

Most overdoses come to no harm. For all overdoses (even common ones) it is good practice to refer to TOXBASE www.toxbase.org (password required). Print out a copy of the advice to put in the patient’s notes and follow the advice. If patient is unwell or you are not sure or a mixed overdose has been taken, discuss with a senior and contact the National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) on 0344 892 0111.

On discharge:

  • Ensure patient (and patient's family if appropriate) are given any relevant information
  • Include any relevant TOXBASE advice for the GP in the immediate discharge letter (IDL).
