General Management of Overdoses and Toxicity

Most overdoses come to no harm. For all overdoses (even common ones) it is good practice to refer to TOXBASE (password required). Print out a copy of the advice to put in the patient’s notes and follow the advice. If patient is unwell or you are not sure or a mixed overdose has been taken, discuss with a senior and contact the National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) on 0344 892 0111.

On discharge:

  • Ensure patient (and patient's family if appropriate) are given any relevant information
  • Include any relevant TOXBASE advice for the GP in the immediate discharge letter (IDL).
