Brain abscess

Upper respiratory tract source (sinus and middle ear)

Antibiotic Therapy (before prescribing, read the Notes / Comments section below)

Ceftriaxone* IV 2g 12 hourly

and

Metronidazole oral 400mg 8 hourly (if IV, 500mg 8 hourly)


If true penicillin / beta-lactam allergy / MRSA suspected or suspected metalwork infection:

Contact microbiology / infectious diseases unit for advice (see Appendix 6 for contact details).

Total course duration – discuss with neurology or microbiology / infectious diseases unit.

Notes / Comments

*Ceftriaxone:

  • Is a protected antimicrobial - complete order form
  • It must not be mixed with calcium-containing solutions, and must not be given to any patient simultaneously with calcium-containing solutions – even via different infusion lines.
